The higher order inflorescence axes (PO:0009081) of an determinate thyrse inflorescence may have either a monopodial or sympodial growth habit depending on whether single or paired inflorescence axillary meristems (PO:0009105) develop at each axis. Examples include lilacs (Syringia spp.; Oleaceae), buckeyes (Aesculus spp.; Hippocastanaceae) and hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata; Hydrangeaceae).
