The higher order inflorescence axes (PO:0009081) of an indeterminate thyrse inflorescence may have either a monopodial or sympodial growth habit depending on whether single or paired inflorescence axillary meristems (PO:0009105) develop at each axis. Examples include beardtongues (Penstemon spp.; Plantaginaceae).
