Term Information

Accession
GO:0019172
Name
glyoxalase III activity
Ontology
molecular_function
Synonyms
(R)-lactate hydro-lyase, D-lactate dehydratase, glutathione-independent glyoxalase activity
Alternate IDs
None
Definition
Catalysis of the reaction: methylglyoxal + H2O = D-lactate. Source: PMID:7848303, GOC:mcc, PMID:21696459, RHEA:27754
Comment
Note that this term was reinstated from obsolete. Also note that this enzymatic activity converts methylglyoxal to D-lactate in a single glutathione (GSH)-independent step. The other known route for this conversion is the two-step GSH-dependent pathway catalyzed by EC:4.4.1.5 (lactoylglutathione lyase) and EC:3.1.2.6 (hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase).
