Definition
OBSOLETE. Initiating the assembly of the RNA polymerase III pre-initiation complex by binding to a control sequence in the intragenic region. This allows to recruit TFIIIB to the DNA at a site centered approximately 26 base pairs upstream of the start site of transcription. For tRNA genes, TFIIIC first associates with DNA, and then recruits TFIIIB. For 5S rRNA genes, TFIIIA binds to DNA first, followed by TFIIIC, which then recruits TFIIIB. Comment
The reason for obsoletion is that this function is redundant with other terms, most often 'transcription co-regulator activity; GO:0003712'.
