For b-carotene analysis, 15 milliliters of the extract are transferred to a tube and dried with nitrogen gas. Immediately before injection, the residue is redissolved in 1 ml of HPLC grade acetone filtered through a 0.22-mm PTFE syringe filter directly into sample vials, and 10 ml is injected into the HPLC. Separation is carried out on a YMC C30 polymeric column (3 mm, 4.6 mm _ 250 mm) using as mobile phase an isocratic elution methanol: methyl-tert-butyl-eter (80:20) with a flow rate set as 0.8 ml/ min.
