Term Information

Accession
GO:0016458
Name
gene silencing
Ontology
biological_process
Synonyms
long-term maintenance of gene inactivation
Alternate IDs
None
Definition
Any process carried out at the cellular level that results in either long-term transcriptional repression via action on chromatin structure or RNA mediated, post-transcriptional repression of gene expression. Source: GOC:dph, GOC:jid, GOC:dos, GOC:tb
Comment
This is a rather broad grouping term. While it was originally defined for long-term, heritable, epigenetic effects, short term effects on expression mediated by RNA are also frequently referred to as gene silencing, and are grouped under this class.
